Penelope No Longer Knits (Argentina, 1946) - Malena Sandor

Description:

Argentine playwright Malena Sándor championed feminine desire and independence in Penelope No Longer Knits (1946). A traditional feminine icon goes to earth to teach “modern women” a lesson on fidelity and feminine virtue . After an empowering year of living in the modern era, however, Penelope gains a new outlook.

May Farnsworth, Camila Garcia, and Erin Griffis published a complete translation of Penelope ya no teje in the translation journal, The Mercurian, on November 14, 2023. Follow the publication link here:

Excerpt:

WOMAN 2: I know you’re charming, but I wonder what else is making you so intriguing and appealing. Maybe it’s this absent husband of yours. Or could it be the thrill of getting caught if he does return? [...]

WOMAN 1: You’re an abandoned woman. We’re all inspired by your fidelity.

WOMAN 2: To be honest, I would be more inspired by your infidelity.

PENELOPE: I don’t think I can forget my husband [...]

COUNT: You promised us you would decide once you finished knitting.

SUZY: Penelope, the one from the story, she knitted.

COUNT: Can’t we update that story a little?
