The Siren Who Carried the Sea (La sirena que llevaba el mar, 1952) by Malgdalena Mondragon Aguirre.
Description
Magdalena Mondragón Aguirre (1913-1989) dramatized women's perspectives in post-revolutionary Mexico. In The Siren Who Carried the Sea (1952), Nereida, a fisherman's wife, contemplates joining the sirens in the ocean after encountering a mystical winged serpent. "I’ve always wanted to see a siren, but I don’t want my wife to become one," the fisherman complains. But, by the time he realizes what's happening, the sirens have already started seducing his wife. "The sirens are singing, and calling upon me. Listen to them, listen to them!," Nereida cries.
