Los Animales (Animals)

Camila reads about animals.

The teacher will only speak in Spanish for the duration of this class for a more immersive language learning experience.

Materials needed: Read-aloud book, animal pictures, tape, music, and images of farm and zoo.

Workshop Activities:

Introducing Vocabulary and Read Aloud

1) Teacher will introduce vocabulary through choral repetition while showing pictures of animals.

Tip: Students will often mimic the manner in which a word is being presented to them so try whispering, yelling, cheering, etc the vocabulary to get learners more engaged!

Vocabulary:

De la granja- from the farm

Pollo (Chicken), Gallo (Rooster), Caballo (Horse), Cerdo (Pig), Oveja (Sheep), Llama (Llama), Vaca (Cow)

Del zoo- from the zoo

Serpiente (Snake), Jirafa (Giraffe), Gorila (Gorilla), León (Lion), Cebra (Zebra),  Guepardo (Cheeta), Foca (Seal)

2) Children will listen to the names of the animals and the teacher will make the noise of the animal and have students make the noises that each animal makes back.

3) Teacher will read two books to the students. One should focus on animals on the granja. The other should focus on the zoo. Find possible book options in the Libro section of this page.

Matching Activity

Teacher will hang a picture of a farm and a picture of a zoo on two walls on either side of the room.

1) Teacher will hand out images of animals to students that belong either to the Granja (farm) or the Zoo.

2) Children will match the pictures to the location that best fits. Teacher may help children when they are stuck by asking paired questions and pointing to the options (¿El gorila vive el la granja o el zoo?)

Music Activity

1) Teacher will sing the song below for students and encourage them to join in. Teacher should review Youtube video beforehand to learn the tune of the song but the video is not intended to be used in the class. The video is also a good tool for parents/caregivers to use at home.

Vengan a Ver mi Granja

Outside Adaptation:

This lesson can be adapted to take place outside. We have included another activity that works very well outside and can replace the song if there isn't access to electricity to play the music.

Pato, Pato, “Animal” (Duck, Duck, Animal)

After going over the animal vocabulary with the students, should time permit, you can play duck duck goose (Pato, pato, ganso). The students will each be given pictures of the animals. When playing the game, instead of using the word goose students should select another student and yell out the animal found in front of them, having learned the name of the animal in Spanish thats how they will call out the chaser.

(Ex. Pato, Pato, Vaca! and the game is played as normal otherwise)
